Auditorium Livestream Audio Volunteer Role Guide

Task-focused guide for the Auditorium Livestream Audio position — creating the broadcast mix used by the Program Feed and ASL Feed, monitoring the Wing, and recording the sermon, with quick-start checklist and first responses to common problems.

Document Control

Before You Start

  • Confirm that you are serving as the Livestream Audio operator in the Auditorium.
  • Arrive at least 20 minutes before the start of the service.
  • Remove the cover from the Wing console.
  • Power on the Livestream Audio system using the light switches to the right of the board.
  • Get the paper service schedule from the FOH Audio operator.

Quick-Start Checklist

  1. Review the service schedule from FOH Audio.
  2. Check that audio is reaching the livestream computer.
  3. Confirm the USB drive is connected and ready for sermon recording.
  4. Set the monitor speakers to a usable level after the Wing is fully booted.
  5. Keep the room quiet enough that you can stay focused on the mix.

What You Are Responsible For

You are responsible for the broadcast mix used by the Program Feed and ASL Feed, for monitoring the Wing during the service, and for recording the sermon to USB when that recording is needed. You are not responsible for switching cameras or starting the livestream itself, but your mix is what those destinations carry.

What Good Looks Like

  • The livestream computer is receiving clean audio before service starts.
  • The average main level stays in the normal target range of about -6 dB to -1 dB.
  • Only the microphones needed at the moment are turned on.
  • Choir and congregation microphones are chosen appropriately for the moment.
  • Special music sounds natural and the melody comes through clearly.
  • The sermon recording starts before the sermon and is stopped cleanly after the service.

Operating Steps

  1. Arrive at least 20 minutes early, remove the board cover, power on the system from the switches to the right of the board, and review the service schedule from FOH Audio.
  2. Check that audio is reaching the livestream computer and that the USB drive is ready for sermon recording.
  3. During service, stay focused and keep conversation and other room noise to a minimum.
  4. Watch the main meter and try to keep the average level between -6 dB and -1 dB.
  5. Make sure microphones are turned on before each speaker starts.
  6. Start the USB recording before the sermon begins.
  7. When the choir is present during congregational singing, use the choir microphones. Otherwise use the congregation microphones.
  8. Keep only the microphones needed at the moment turned on.
  9. When bringing in choir microphones, leave the fader low, unmute first, and then bring the level up smoothly.
  10. Use reverb during special music when it helps the vocal sound more natural.
  11. During group special music, mix so the melody clearly comes through.

Common Problems and First Responses

Helpful Context

  • Most Livestream Audio sources arrive from the Avantis over Dante, while the congregation microphones come directly into the Wing.
  • The Wing sends the main livestream audio path to vMix and also feeds the House Overflow path through the ATEM.
  • When no Livestream Audio operator is present, the vMix operator may switch the Wing into FOH Source Mode so the livestream uses the FOH mix as its source.
  • The Livestream Audio monitor-speaker volume knob is toward the top left of the Wing.

Shutdown or Handoff

  • Stop the USB recording after the service.
  • Make sure the livestream has actually been stopped before shutting down the board.
  • Turn off the system using the switches to the right of the board.
  • Replace the cover on the console.
  • If you are the last person to leave the room, make sure the lights are off and the door is closed.
  • Note any recording, routing, or level issues for the next operator or the AV Leader on Duty.
